Top Tips for Improving Your Skincare Routine in 2021

It’s not too late to make a promise to improve your skin health in 2021 with a few simple steps.

We understand that setting new year resolutions can at times feel as though you are on a countdown for the entire year to achieve them. It’s a little like the ‘iceberg effect’, where only the tip peeks out from the water surface, but the positive progress and change below is still to be fully realised.

Here at Stemlab, we prefer to focus on an approach that prioritises your wellness and progress over perfection. On that note, it’s definitely not too late to make a promise to improve your skin health in 2021 with a few simple steps. We have included some of our top recommendations below.

Get active

We don’t mean physically active, although that’s a great thing too. Getting active in this context refers to adding (and correctly using) active ingredients in your skincare. Active inclusions are essential components that are proven and designed to treat and improve a specific concern. For example, our Anti-Aging Retinol Serum is a plant-derived natural retinol alternative that stimulates the production of collagen, which helps reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles, improve acne, fade pigmentation and more!

Go natural

High quality, natural, yet effective skincare is on the rise, and it’s easy to see why. Although synthetics and chemically potent can promise fast results, this does often come at a cost to your skin health. Sometimes, to accelerate skin renewal and deliver quicker results, these products have the side effect of stripping or upsetting the balance of your skin’s natural barrier. This can lead to irritation, redness and increased sensitivity, which means the improvements you saw initially are overshadowed.

All of our Stemlab products are researched and developed by qualified experts with a vision to take a less is more approach to delivering natural, proven results, gradually. We also use vegan, cruelty free and locally, ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients only.

Don’t neglect sunscreen

Investing in a good routine and sticking to it will deliver the best long-term improvements to your skin health. However, just like coffee that is served luke warm, your results won’t be as good if you don’t protect your skincare investment. Anytime you are exposed to the sun, please apply (and if necessary, reapply) a high factor SPF to protect against harsh UVA/UVB rays (yes even on overcast days where they have proven to cause damage).

This way your serums and creams will be able to work away, you will have peace of mind knowing your routine is optimised by protecting your face.

Avoid the urge to wear makeup to bed

We definitely aren’t judging – sometimes, between juggling a busy schedule and multiple demands it’s hard to seek the motivation and willpower to wipe the day away. It can be so tempting to dive under the covers and lay your head on the pillow with your makeup safely intact.

Once in a rare while this is acceptable if you’re completely spent, however bear in mind makeup doesn’t allow the skin to oxygenate as well as it could.

Wearing makeup to bed (even the mineral or natural kind) also means you won’t have applied fresh active ingredients (such as the antioxidant and nutrient-rich Stemlab serums) that work overnight to regenerate and repair the damage, whilst balancing your natural oils and hydrating your skin to avoid signs of premature aging.

A quick deep cleanse to remove, following by toner, serum and moisturiser all up takes just minutes and your skin will thank you for it later when you wake up to a natural glow, rather than a blemish.
