The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Routine

Although the Stemlab team definitely advocate a ‘less is more’ approach to skincare and beauty, we also understand daily demands can make us time poor.
The need for efficiency and effectiveness in a workable skincare routine is key.

In a few simple steps, twice daily, you can help improve your skin health and achieve a natural, radiant glow. However, the order in which each component of your routine is applied is integral and we’ll walk you through the how and why below.

Daily skincare routine

A daily cleanse is like a morning cup of coffee for your skin. To ‘wake up’, revive and refresh skin for the day ahead and protect it for what lays ahead, we recommend following this dermatologically approved method:

Step 1 – Cleanse

Depending on your skin and hair type natural oils (and bacteria) can accumulate and transfer between your pillowcase to your skin as you slumber, so it’s nice to wash these off the next day. If you use any actives in your evening routine, it’s also a good way to remove whatever remains and have a clean base for the rest of your morning routine. The Stemlab Ultra Purifying Gel Cleanser also gently exfoliates for smoother skin.

Step 2 – Tone

Toning helps to balance skin oils and hydration and also helps to prime your face for ingredients to be better absorbed.

Step 3 – Serum

Our nutrient-rich, active serums that are proven to target the skin concern they are designed to improve. Select the best for to address what you need for your skin – be this hydration and radiance, managing breakouts and oil control, rejuvenation (signs of premature aging like lines and wrinkles) or repair (ideal for skin damage such as pigmentation from the sun).

Step 4 – Eye cream

The skin around the eye is very delicate and thinner than the rest of your face and therefore shows signs of aging faster than other areas generally do. Applying a targeted eye-specific product at this point in your skincare routine can help repair and treat dehydration and fine lines.

Step 5 – Spot treatment

Pending your skin type and product choice, you may not need this step. For example, our Stemlab Ultra Purifying Gel Cleanser contains purifying and balancing antibacterial ingredients such as Willow Bark and natural fruit enzymes which will improve the appearance of acne prone skin over time with regular use. Likewise, our Repair & Glow Serum contains Niacinamide 3% and Vitamin E which reduce inflammation and spots.

Step 6 – Moisturiser

This step seals in all the good work you’ve just done applying naturally, nourishing actives and also hydrates the skin throughout the day.

Step 7 – Sunscreen

Never skip sunscreen! Even overcast, cloudy days can be deceiving and you can be doing substantial damage to your skin from powerful UVA/UVB rays (and reversing all the progress your skincare is trying to achieve for you in turning back the clock for your skin)! This is also an essential step when using active ingredients that can make the skin more suspectable to the effects of the sun. Invest in a high SPF and apply liberally and often, every morning as the last step in your routine.

Night time skincare routine

You evening routine won’t differ too much from your morning one, however the cleanse now is perhaps more important as you are removing any pollution, dirt, dust, makeup and all the actives from your day and helping prepare your skin to regenerate whilst you sleep.

Still follow the: Cleanse – Tone – Serum – Eye cream – Moisturiser steps, but for obvious reasons skip the Sunscreen! In the evening you can also use your retinol based products, such as our Anti-Aging Retinol Serum which contains Retinyl Palmitate 1% – a natural way to improve breakouts and repair skin damage including pigmentation and wrinkles.

Stemlab tip: wait for each component to ‘dry’ or absorb so you don’t neutralise any actives/natural acids.
